Midas Whale

Midas Whale is a folk-country-pop duo from Rexburg, Idaho who competed on season 4 of The Voice USA, mentored by Adam Levine. They were eliminated in the knockout rounds on April 29, 2013.

The duo consists of Jon Peter Lewis and Ryan Hayes.

BackgroundEdit

Before the show, Lewis was better known as a finalist on season 3 of American Idol, where he finished in eighth place. He released two independent solo albums, Stories from Hollywood and Break the Silence, in 2006 and 2008. Fellow member Hayes was working as a geologist when he and Lewis teamed up as Midas Whale(a pun on the pharse "might as well") and decided to try out for The Voice.

The Voice USAEdit

Lewis and Hayes tried out for the show where they put their own spin on the Johnny Cash classic "Folsom Prison Blues", which had all four coaches turn their chairs around. Both guys also charmed Shakira with their ability to each speak fluent Spanish.

In the end, Lewis and Hayes chose Adam Levine as their coach.

Battle RoundsEdit

In the battle rounds, Lewis and Hayes went up against Memphis soul-rock singer Patrick Dodd, taking on the Elvis Presley classic "Burning Love". After enjoying the overall performance and agonizing over his decision, Levine chose the duo to move forward to the knockout round.

Knockout RoundsEdit

The duo went up against Amber Carrington, who sang Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You". The guys' take on the Stevie Wonder song "Higher Ground" was very impressive, but Levine chose Carrington to move forward to the live shows. Fans of Midas Whale expressed their anger on Twitter.

Post The VoiceEdit

Despite being eliminated in the knockout rounds, Midas Whale launched a campaign via Kickstarter.com to raise $30,000 to help them make an album, a goal that they successfully reached by raising $36,442. Both guys say that they have written enough songs for two albums. They even posted a demo version of a song they were writing called "Bright and Early" on YouTube. The guys even made an appearence on Yahoo! Music where they sang another song that they wrote called "Howling At the Moon". The music video for that song is now on their official webisite. Their debut album, Sugar House, was released on February 11, 2014.

In addition to working on their music, the guys also wrote a rock opera called Deep Love, which starred fellow season 4 Voice alum Amy Whitcomb. Ryan Hayes even released a solo EP, and Jon Peter Lewis will be releasing his third solo album sometime in 2016. The guys are also working on new music as Midas Whale.
