At the time she tried out for the show, Melanie was a high school student. Besides music, she also enjoys photography.
Melanie tried out for the show by putting her own twist on the Britney Spears hit "Toxic". Three coaches - Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Cee Lo Green- all turned around for her. All three loved her voice and intrstrumental ability, and after hearing what all three guys had to say, she chose Adam to be her mentor.
Through out her time on the show, Melanie impressed the public with her unique look(two-toned hair and quirky fashion sense) and her song choices ranging from "Cough Syrup" by Young the Giant to "Too Close" by Alex Clare. Despite having a critic in Yahoo! Music's Matt Wittfield, who called her "creepy" and untalented, Melanie had the support of her mentor Adam Levine, who always gave her advice and encouragement. However, Melanie and fellow Team Adam member Amanda Brown were both eliminated in week five, resulting in Team Adam no longer being in contention that season.
