Born in Springfield, Ohio, Legend began singing at age four with his church choir. He later started playing piano at age seven. He also was president and musical director of a jazz and pop a cappella group called Counterparts while he was a student at the University of Pennsylvania. While at college, he was introduced to singer Lauryn Hill by a friend. She hired Legend to play piano on her song "Everything is Everything", which is off of her 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
After that experience, Legend, who was already playing gigs, graduated from college in 1999 and focused on his music career, eventually meeting hip-hop star Kanye West in 2001. He was signed to West's label and released his debut album, Get Lifted, in 2004. He has gone on to release 4 more albums. His biggest hit to date is the 2013 hit "All of Me", which he wrote for his wife, Chrissy Teigen. He is one of only 15 people(and the first black man) to win an Emmy, a Tony, a Grammy, and an Oscar.
Legend has been married to model, author, and television personality Chrissy Teigen since 2013. They met in 2007 when she was cast in the music video for his song "Stereo". The couple have two children, daughter Luna(born April 14, 2016) and son Miles(born May 16, 2018).
